TULSA, Okla. – A late push from the Oral Roberts volleyball team nearly kept the match alive before visiting Illinois State claimed the victory (18-25, 18-25, 28-30) Friday in its opening contest of the 2019 ORU Invitational at the Aerobics Center.
The Golden Eagles battled back after facing six match points, but could not hold off the Redbirds on their seventh attempt deep into the third set. The teams opening the action in a tightly-contested opening stanza featuring 10 tie scores and three lead changes before Illinois State used a 7-2 run to take the early advantage.
CeCe Madison turned in a double-double performance on the night leading ORU with 12 kills and 11 digs. The senior from Midlothian, Texas, increased her kill total in every set played Friday, including five in the final set.

- Sylvia Lawson recorded 21 set assists and five digs.
- Sarah Thiessen reached double-digit digs for the ORU defense posting 10 for the contest.
- Taylan Nero and Sakira LaCour each tallied a solo block, while Nero and Lawson finished with three block assists.
- Jeslyn Spencer made her debut with the Golden Eagles in the second set and started set three, where she recorded her first collegiate kill.
