FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team learned its postseason destination and will head to Denton, Texas, for the first round of the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The Golden Eagles will face host North Texas Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the 32-team tournament.
ORU (15-13, 107 RPI) meets the Mean Green (28-3, 47 RPI) in the first round of the tournament with TCU (11-16, 80 RPI) and Wyoming (17-13, 87 RPI) on the other side of the bracket. The Horned Frogs and Cowgirls open the site playing at 4 p.m. The games will be held at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
It's the 16th postseason appearance for the Golden Eagles in program history and their first-ever trip to the NIVC as they return to a postseason tournament since winning The Summit League Championship in 2006. ORU fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 13 Oklahoma ending the 2006 campaign in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Official NIVC Announcement
Officials for the National Invitational Volleyball Championship have announced the 32 teams (20 Automatic Qualifiers and 12 At Large) and first-round details for the 2017 postseason tournament, which has been revived after its six-year run from 1989-1995.
The 32-team field features 17 programs with 18 or more wins and five schools that finished first in regular-season conference play (Albany, North Texas, Sacramento State, Stephen F. Austin, and Maryland Eastern Shore). Additionally, six schools in the field are ranked or receiving votes in the latest Volleyball Magazine Mid-Major poll with No. 12 North Texas, No. 16 UC Irvine, No. 20 SMU, No. 23 Sacramento State, No. 24 Rice, and Texas State (RV).
In all, 23 conferences will be represented with both the Big 12 and American featuring three teams each. The Sun Belt, Mountain West, SEC, Horizon, and C-USA will each have two schools competing. The SWAC, America East, MAC, Big South, Patriot, Missouri Valley, Summit, West Coast, Big Sky, Ohio Valley, Southland, ACC, Colonial, Big West, Southern, and MEAC with one.
"You can already feel the enthusiasm and desire within the rosters and coaching staffs of these 32 programs," said NIVC event director Sean Hardy. "As college basketball has come to appreciate over time with the WNIT and NIT, so much can be accomplished when deserving teams get to continue their schedule and build a framework for success next season."
