SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Head coach Jeff Hooker is in his 28th season leading the Pioneers with a 355-154-48 record, including 166-34-13 in league play. The Pioneers offense is led by 2018 Summit League Freshman of the Year Samantha Feller, she leads Denver with seven points and three goals. Hannah Adler, the 2018 Summit Championship MVP, has netted two goals and one assist for a total of five points on the season. Senior defender Cheyenne Shorts, along with goal keeper Brittany Wilson, have given up only seven goals on the season, while recording six shutouts.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. DENVER
Oral Roberts is 3-4-0 all-time against Denver, including a 2-0 record when playing at the Case Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles have dropped the last to contests to the Pioneers losing, 3-0, in Denver last season. ORU last defeated Denver, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 12, 2017, Jordan Langebartels and former Golden Eagle Caitlyn Hanslovan each netted a goal.
The Golden Eagles will take the pitch for first time in nearly two weeks since its last match on Sept. 22. Due to heavy rains on Wednesday, Sept. 25, Case Soccer Complex was deemed unsafe and unplayable that forced the match between the Golden Eagles and Florida Atlantic Owls to be cancelled.
PLAYING WITH THE BEST
Despite a 3-6-1 start, the Golden Eagles have played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in recent years. ORU has faced five opponents ranked in the top-100 in the RPI ratings, including three in the top-75 and two in the top-40. Most notably, the Golden Eagles have played two United Soccer Coaches top-25 nationally ranked opponents in Texas Tech No. 18 and Oklahoma State No. 25. Saint Louis received one vote in the latest poll released on Sept. 30.
Attackers Martha Helsee, Drishana Pillay and Shayla Padilla each have 10 or more points on the season. Pillay leads the trio with five goals and one assist, totaling 11 points. Helsee is not far behind with four goals and two assists for ten points, while Padilla has four assists and three goals for ten points. Padilla's four assists is tied for the Summit League lead with Alexis Mitchell of South Dakota.
MISTER ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Head Coach Roger Bush is back for his seventh season leading the Golden Eagles, after six seasons Bush has a 58-57-10 record at ORU. Bush holds a 3-3-0 all-time record when coaching against the Denver Pioneers. Student-athletes under Bush have earned 26 all-conference honors, 13 player of the week awards and two have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Bush was named the 2016 Summit League Women's Coach of the Year.
SUMMIT LEAGUE PRESEASON OUTLOOK
A year after finishing 3-5-0 in league play, the Golden Eagles were picked to finish seventh in the 2019 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll. Senior midfielder Jordan Langenbartels was one of 13 athletes named to the The Summit League Players to Watch List, Langenbartels led the Golden Eagles with career-highs in goals (7) and points (18) despite only appearing in 15 of 20 matches. Denver received seven first place votes, while Hannah Adler, Samantha Feller, Meg Halvorson and Cheyenne Shorts were named to The Summit League Players to Watch List.
SUMMIT LEAGUE CURRENT OUTLOOK
With only two games played, North Dakota and Western Illinois sit atop the standings at 1-0. North Dakota defeated South Dakota, 2-1, on Oct. 3, while Western Illinois beat Omaha, 1-0. The Golden Eagles and Pioneers aren't the only teams in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, Western Illinois hosts Purdue Fort Wayne, North Dakota State at home against South Dakota and North Dakota will travel to South Dakota State.
A SHIFT IN THE SUMMIT
On June 20, 2019, Summit League commissioner Tom Douple announced the addition of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Roos are set to join the league on July 1, 2020. A second shift came on August 6, 2019, when Purdue Fort Wayne announced that the Mastodons' final year of competition as a league member will be the 2019-20 academic year. Most recently, The Summit League extended an invitation to the University of St. Thomas. St. Thomas, a current Division III university located in Saint Paul, Minn., has applied for a waiver to make the direct leap from Division III to Division I. If granted, St. Thomas would begin to compete in the Summit League as early as 2021.
