Nelson is just the second Oral Roberts athlete to be named Summit League Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year recipient (Marvin Bonde, 2010-11). The freshman finished the indoor season tied for the NCAA's fourth-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles with his 7.69 seconds.
He was the lone male track participant from The Summit League at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships where he finished in 11th, earning Second Team All-America honors. Nelson won four hurdle events in his first collegiate indoor season.
Estala becomes the Golden Eagle's second Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honoree, joining fellow pole-vaulter Jack Whitt who won three consecutive awards (2009-12). The junior became a two-time Second Team All-American by finishing 10th in the pole vault at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season in February.
The Paris, Ark., native also claimed his second straight Summit League pole vault championship in 2016. Estala won five pole vault events during the indoor season, setting a new career-best height of 17'9.25" (5.42m) which tied him for 15th on the season's NCAA list.
