FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Three days after learning that he would be accepted into the NCAA National Championship meet, sophomore Justin Estala moved up the leaderboard and took 10th overall in the men's pole vault on Friday.
When the regular season ended, Estala was 20th in the nation, just outside of the top 16 that qualified for the meet. Injuries and other factors allowed him to make the cut and Estala made the most of it, clearing the opening mark of 17-0.75 (5.20m) on his first attempt, which proved beneficial.
After passing on the next height, Estala was unsuccessful on his three attempts at 17-4.5 (5.30m). When everyone was finished, Estala was tied with two other competitors, but his make on the first attempt gave him the tie breaker and put him 10th.
With the finish, Estala will be named a second team All-American by the USTFCCCA, marking the second year in a row in which an ORU sophomore has earned All-American honors after Madison Reynolds did so in the outdoor 400m dash.
Estala and the rest of the Golden Eagles will now turn to the outdoor season, which begins March 21 with the Tulsa Duels.
