Four honored by Summit League; Chavez named top offensive player

TULSA, Okla. - Four Oral Roberts University men's soccer players were honored Wednesday by the Summit League as the conference announced the 2014 all-conference teams.

The league coaches honored redshirt senior Johnny Chavez as the Offensive Player of the Year, as well as a member of the First Team All-Summit League. Other honorees included Gerardo Salas as a First Team selection, and Kaspars Kokis and Tarik Salkicic were each named to the All-Newcomer Team.

Chavez is the third Golden Eagle in program history to win the conference Offensive Player of the Year award, and the first to do so since Dave Leung won the award in back-to-back seasons in 2004-05.

A forward from Tulsa, Chavez led the league through the regular season with 10 goals scored, including game-winning goals against Missouri State, Central Arkansas and Eastern Illinois. His 2014 output was the fourth-most goals scored by a Golden Eagle in program history.

It's the second career postseason award for Chavez as he was named to the All-Newcomer Team as a freshman.

Chavez was also honored by the conference on Monday as he was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, his first career individual honor.

Joining him on the first team was Salas, a midfielder from Dallas. Salas netted two goals and earned an assist this season, scoring the opening goal at Incarnate Word, adding his second of the season in a home victory over UIW.

Salkicic played a key role in the ORU attack this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists, helping him to an All-Newcomer Team selection. Salkicic scored two game-winners for the Golden Eagles, including a golden goal against Houston Baptist on September 22.

Rounding out the Summit League postseason awards was Kaspars Kokis. A junior from Owasso, Oklahoma, Kokis saw time all over the pitch this season, receiving the honor as a midfielder.

College Sports Madness also released its All-Summit League teams Wednesday morning. Much like the league's official honors, Chavez was named Offensive Player of the Year and listed on the first team. Other CSM honorees include defender Trevor Laffoon on the first team and forward Matthew Rogers on the second team.
