ELMHURST, Ill. - A pair of Oral Roberts University men's soccer players swept the weekly Summit League awards as Johnny Chavez was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Ben LaCourse was named the Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Chavez netted three goals in two ORU wins last week, scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 win over Central Arkansas on Tuesday, and adding two goals in a 5-0 blowout against Eastern Illinois in the regular season finale on Saturday.
A redshirt senior from Tulsa, Chavez finished the regular season with a league-high 10 goals, the fourth-most goals in a season by a Golden Eagle, and become the first 10-goal scorer since 2003.
LaCourse received the weekly defensive honor after recording two shutouts in goal for ORU. The sophomore pulled in two saves in the win over UCA, and four saves in the EIU victory, including a save on a penalty kick in the first half.
A native of Tulsa, LaCourse (8-7-2) has earned three straight shutouts, running his total to five shutouts on the season. He hasn't allowed a goal in 282 consecutive minutes.
Chavez and LaCourse helped ORU (8-7-2) to a share of the 2014 Summit League regular season title, the first for the Golden Eagle since 2004. The Golden Eagles will take on Western Illinois on Thursday in the Summit League tournament semifinals at 11 a.m. CST in Denver, Colorado.
