TULSA, Okla. - Following the postponement of its season opener on Friday at Central Arkansas, the Oral Roberts University men's soccer team will finally get the regular season started on Monday as the Golden Eagles host Missouri State. Kickoff at the Case Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
ORU went 1-0-1 in exhibition play, defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 1-0 Aug. 15, and finishing in a 2-2 draw last Friday against USAO. Edgardo Mira scored goals in each contest, with Gerardo Salas picking up assists on both Mira goals. Ben LaCourse started both matches in goal for the Golden Eagles, recording three saves in each.
After finishing second in the Summit League last season, the Golden Eagles have been tabbed to finish fourth in the league this season. Wayne Farmer and Trevor Laffoon highlighted ORU's preseason accolades with College Sports Madness First Team All-Summit League mentions, while Mira and Alex White were listed on the second team.
The Bears kicked off their season on Friday and defeated Incarnate Word in the opener, 1-0. Junior forward James Thomas picked up the goal in the victory.
MSU, who has been tabbed to win the Missouri Valley Conference regular season for the second consecutive season, had two preseason all-conference honorees; seniors Jack Roberts and James Fawke. Roberts was second on the team in 2013 with four goals scored.
The Bears defense, led by Fawke, led the national with a 0.41 goals against average last season, the 18th best season in NCAA DI history. Opponents scored only eight total goals against the Bears in 2013.
Mira scored one of the goals the Bears allowed last season in a 1-0 ORU victory at home, snapping a three-match winning streak by the Bears in the all-time series between the two squads. The second meeting of the season at MSU ended in a scoreless draw.
MSU leads the all-time series, 12-3-3.
