TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts University men's soccer team kicks off the regular season on Friday night as the Golden Eagles travel to Central Arkansas for the first of two regular season showdowns. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
ORU went 1-0-1 in exhibition play, defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 1-0 Aug. 15, and finishing in a two-all draw last Friday against USAO. Edgardo Mira scored goals in each contest, with Gerardo Salas picking up assists on both Mira goals. Ben LaCourse started both matches in goal for the Golden Eagles, recording three saves in each.
After finishing second in the Summit League last season, the Golden Eagles have been tabbed to finish fourth in the league this season. Wayne Farmer and Trevor Laffoon highlighted ORU's preseason accolades with College Sports Madness First Team All-Summit League mentions, while Mira and Alex White were listed on the second team.
UCA was picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll after finishing the 2013 season 4-11-2 overall and 0-4-2 in the conference. Despite the team struggles last season, seniors Logan Miller and Matt Taphorn were named 2014 Preseason All-MVC.
A second team all-conference member last season, Miller finished second on the UCA squad with five goals scored and led the team with five assist. Taphorn anchors the Bear backline, earning MVC postseason awards in each of his three seasons.
ORU and UCA split a pair of matches last season, with the Bears taking the first contest in Conway, 1-0, and the Golden Eagles avenging the early loss with a 2-1 win in double overtime at the Case Soccer Complex. Johnny Chavez crossed the ball along the endline from the right side to Griffith Poindexter who finished with a header for the game-winner.
The Bears lead the all-time series 5-4 against the Golden Eagles.
