TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts University men's soccer schedule kicks off on Friday evening at the Case Soccer Complex as the Golden Eagles host NAIA member Oklahoma Wesleyan in the first of two exhibition matches. Kickoff between ORU and OKWU is set for 7 p.m.
ORU finished the 2013 campaign second place in the Summit League with a 3-2-1 record, its highest finish in league play since 2005, and they finished 6-8-4 overall. OKWU (19-3-1) completed its season ranked fifth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), winning the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference before falling in the national quarterfinals.
Of the 17 goals scored last season for the Golden Eagles, 13 were scored by returning players, led by sophomore Edgardo Mira with four goals. Seniors Johnny Chavez and Gerardo Salas were two of three players to earn three assists last season to lead the team.
Between the posts, the dual threat of Isaac Sandoval and Ben LaCourse direct a defense that allowed just 22 goals, fewest allowed in a season by an ORU team. LaCourse started the first nine contests and recorded 40 saves, while Sandoval started the final 10 matches, earning 44 saves and three shutouts.
Sandoval didn't allow a goal in 309 minutes of action between Oct. 1 and Oct. 20, recording shutouts in his first two starts of the season.
The OKWU defense was strong last season as well as they allowed ten goals, led by keeper Luka Stojanovic. He finished the season second in the NAIA in goals against average, allowing just 0.64 a contest. The Eagle defense blanked opponents in 12 matches a year ago, tying them for the national lead in shutouts.
Head coach Jamie Peterson returns his top two goal scorers from last season, including Jack McGowan with 15 and Lucas Corderio with 12.
ORU will conclude the exhibition portion of its schedule on August 22 at home against USAO, before beginning the regular season on the road at Central Arkansas on August 29.
