TUSCON, Ariz. – Oral Roberts baseball's Isaac Coffey earned an elite honor Wednesday being named to the 2019 Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American team, powered by Diamond.
A native of Goleta, California, Coffey was an All-Summit League First Team selection as a utility player in his first campaign with the Golden Eagles in 2019. He was the league's top offensive freshman in home runs (6), RBI (32) and slugging percentage (.472) and also ranked in the top 10 of the conference hitting 11 doubles with a .292 batting average.
The all-around utility man started 14 games on the mound, while primarily in the lineup as a designated hitter. Coffey also played at third base and first base at ORU. His 3.82 ERA was the best for an ORU starter and ranked fifth in the league as he threw 61.1 innings and fanned 56 for a 3-2 record.
Coffey saved his best pitching performance for his final outing as he tossed a five-hit, complete-game shutout of South Dakota State during an elimination game of the 2019 Summit League Baseball Championship at J.L. Johnson Stadium. He struck out a season-high nine batters in the outing helping ORU advance to the title game.
He joins an elite list of Golden Eagles as the 16th to land Freshman All-American accolades in program history and the first since Matt Whatley in 2015.
