Big Sixth Inning Pushes Jacksonville State Past ORU, 8-3

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - A five-run sixth inning helped Jacksonville State to its 10th win of the season in an 8-3 victory over the Oral Roberts baseball team Tuesday evening in Jacksonville, Alabama. 

Oral Roberts (7-8) opened the contest with a run in the first off an RBI triple by senior Rolando Martinez, but Jacksonville State answered back with a run of their own in the second to knot things up at one apiece. 

Neither team was able to put another run on the board until the sixth inning when the Gamecocks struck for five to take a commanding 6-1 lead headed to the seventh. JSU (10-5) took advantage of three ORU walks and a balk to go along with four hits in the inning. 

Nick Rotola put some life into the Golden Eagles in the eighth as he crushed his first home run of his ORU career out to left field, scoring Chase Stafford who drew a walk earlier in the inning. 

Trevor McCutchin (0-1) took the loss for the Golden Eagles, going a career high three and a third innings and striking out four. The freshman had one and two third total innings prior to tonight. Josh McMinn pitched two innings in the start, giving up only one hit and one run while striking out two. 

Garre Farmer picked up the win for the Gamecocks after an inning and a third of shutout baseball. 


  • Jacksonville State now leads the all-time series 1-0 after the victory. 
  • The Golden Eagles outhit the Gamecocks in the game, 9-8.
  • JSU took advantage of five wild pitches in the game, which is a new season high for ORU.
  • Oral Roberts pitchers issued seven walks.  
  • Matt Whatley extended his team-high 17-game reached base streak with a single late in the game.
