TUCSON, Ariz. - Oral Roberts freshman catcher Matt Whatley picked up another accolade Wednesday, as he was named a 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The Claremore, Okla., native is the 14th Golden Eagle freshman to earn Freshman All-America honors and the first to do so since 2012 when Jose Trevino earned the honor.
Whatley led ORU in hitting with a .355 average earning Summit League Newcomer of the Year honors and First Team All-Summit League accolades at catcher. His 44 RBI were second most among the Golden Eagles and finished the season with a .528 slugging percentage and .437 on base percentage.
Whatley led ORU with 56 runs scored which also ranked in the top 50 nationally adding, three triples and 16 stolen bases. He was named to the Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team after going 6-for-10 in the NCAA tournament.
Whatley was one of four freshmen in The Summit League to earn freshman All-America honors (Luke Ringhofer, SDSU/Evan Miller and BrockLogan, IPFW). Whatley is the 25th Freshman All-American to represent The Summit League, and the first since 2013.
