ORU Honors Student-Athletes at 2017 ELIs

TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University Athletics Department held the 2017 ELIs Award Banquet Wednesday night to honor its student-athletes who had excelled in competition, in the classroom and in the community.  

ORU recognized student-athletes who had earned Summit League Player of the Year, All-Academic or All-America honors. At the end of the night, six student-athletes were selected as the Ultimate Whole Person Champion Team; Albert Owens (men's basketball), Mariah Morgan (women's soccer), Alexia Herrera (women's soccer), Matt Whatley (baseball), Maria Stordahl (women's soccer) and Justin Estala (track & field). From those six, Owens and Stordahl were awarded the President's and First Lady's Cup, respectively.

For the second straight year, the baseball team earned the Carter Cup, given to the Whole Person Team.

Junior closer Kyler Stout won the inaugural Iron Eagle award from Director of Sports Performance Tyler Whitmer.

Awards for Snapchat Hero (Brenda Mercado, women's tennis), Breakout Athlete Award (Emmanuel Nzekwesi, men's basketball), best dressed (Brent Williams, baseball), All In Award (Javier Reyes, men's soccer / Omega Reese, track & field) and Best ORU Sports Moment  (Junior Chavez, men's soccer, bicycle kick goal / SportsCenter Top 10 play) were given out after being voted on by the student-athletes. Michael Hairston was presented with the Varsity Club award, given to a former student-athlete for their contirbutions to the athletic department.

Associate A.D. Kyle Jones gave out his Eli Awards for Academic Excellence, which went to:
