Women’s Tennis Assistant Coach Selected for US Open Internship

TULSA, Okla. – Oral Roberts women's tennis assistant coach Pedro Moreno was selected for an internship in the Player Operations Division of the 2017 US Open from August 17 – September 10 in New York City.

Moreno was one of more than 250 applicants that applied for the internship position. His experience, playing and coaching at the collegiate level and his native proficiency of three languages is what set him apart from the other applicants.

"Pedro has been a huge asset to the ORU Women's Tennis program," ORU Head Coach Beverly Dawson said.  "I am glad to see his work ethic has landed him an internship at the US Open."

Some of Moreno's day-to-day duties included facilitating coaching staff and player needs, assisting in transportation before and after matches as well as being a court escort.

"Dealing with 128 men's and women's professional players and their coaching staff required me to remember a lot of names and faces, every player had a specific way of handling things and interacting with the media and fans," Moreno said. "Different things happened before and during a match that required immediate attention and problem solving skills. It was an amazing experience to get to know every player and actually be able to talk to them."

Moreno was also tasked with working ten hour days every day, but did find time to have some fun. Not only did he get to watch professional tennis in person, he was able to interact with professional tennis athletes, Roger Federer and Dennis Shapovalov on a day-to-day basis. He was also able to make multiple professional tennis connections. Moreno worked alongside Weller Evans, former tour manager of the ATP and Whitney Kraft, Director of the National Tennis Center.

"This work experience would not be possible if it wasn't for Head Coach Beverly Dawson and my ORU professors Dr. Dyson and Dr. Wright, who were kind enough to excuse me from classes for a couple of weeks," Moreno said.
