Martianez, a junior from Barcelona, Spain, was activated on the U20 Spanish National Team roster back in June. The U20 team competed for the FIBA European Championship on Sunday, July 16 and claimed the title by defeating Slovenia, 73-63. Playing the center position, Martianez averaged 16 minutes and 4.6 points per game while playing for Spain. She scored 19 points against Sweden during the group phase of the tournament. Last season for the Golden Eagles, Martianez scored 12.6 points and grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game.
"Maria played beautiful basketball throughout her week of games with her team," Head Coach Misti Cussen said. "We were excited to get to watch most of the games live, and she was so well rounded in her performances. Scoring, rebounding, defending, and even taking multiple charges throughout the tournament. She represented her country and our university extremely well, and we are blessed to have two more years with such an outstanding player and person."
Brotons, a sophomore center from Concentaina, Spain, was named to the U19 Spanish National Team on July 14. She will begin play on Saturday, July 22 against Puerto Rico.
Last season she averaged 4.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles. She made her first career start in the Summit League tournament quarterfinal game against South Dakota State.
"Montserrat came along consistently throughout her freshman season at ORU, and capped it off with an incredible off season this spring before returning to Spain for the summer," Cussen said. "Obviously, she garnered a lot of attention from the coaches of the World Cup squad to be included now with such an elite group of U19 players. We can't wait to follow her progress and watch her play next week. She has an incredibly bright basketball future!"
