Women’s Basketball Falls Short at Northwestern 64-55 Sunday Afternoon

EVANSTON, Illinois – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team lost at Big 10 opponent Northwestern 64-55 Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Ill.

 

The Golden Eagles fell in a 14-1 hole in the first quarter due to hot shooting by Northwestern. In the first quarter Northwestern shot 44.4 percent from the field compared to ORU shooting 22.2 percent. At the end of the quarter the Golden Eagles trailed 19-10.

 

ORU chipped away at the lead in the second quarter and went into halftime down by nine. The team made adjustments at halftime and finished the game shooting 31 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles matched the Wildcats in points in the second, third and fourth quarters.

 

Four Golden Eagles scored in double digits in tonight's contest. Faith Ihim led the team in points with 21. Lakota Beatty scored 13, Kaylan Mayberry had 10 and Maria Martianez scored 10 points with nine rebounds.

 

Each team went to the free throw line 22 times in the game. The Golden Eagles missed eight free throws compared to Northwestern missing only four.

 

TURNING POINT

ORU never led in the game and Northwestern held a 15 point lead in the second quarter. Lakota Beatty narrowed the deficit to three points in the fourth quarter when she scored a layup.

THE LEADERS

Oral Roberts: Faith Ihim scored 21 points as Maria Martianez added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Iowa: Nia Coffey scored 20 points and 11 total rebounds.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- After shooting 28 percent in the first half, the team finished the game shooting 35.6 percent.

- ORU was out-rebounded 42-41 in today's contest.

- ORU turned the ball over just 14 times, but forced Northwestern to turn the ball over 15 times.

- Kaylan Mayberry, Lakota Beatty, Faith Ihim and Maria Martianez each scored in double figures in today's game.

- Freshman Hillary Hurst, Rachel Skalnik and Montserrat Brotons each saw minutes in today's game.

 

UP NEXT

The Golden Eagles will play host to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the annual PSO Mayor's Cup game on Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. inside the Mabee Center. It will also be Native American Heritage Night.
