WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Oral Roberts baseball team scored twice in the ninth inning, but could not erase the deficit in a 7-6 loss at Purdue Tuesday night at Alexander Field in the final mid-week contest of the regular season.
The Golden Eagles rallied with two outs on back-to-back RBI singles from Nick Roark and Spencer Henson getting the potential tying run into scoring position before the Boilermakers tallied the final out. The defense sparkled again for ORU keeping the team within striking distance, including throwing out runners at second base in the fifth and at home in the seventh.
Henson and Nick Rotola combined for five of ORU's nine hits as the visitors scored in four of the final six innings answering the road challenge after Purdue scored twice in the second inning. A RBI double off the bat of Trevor McCutchin made it a one-run contest in the sixth and he later scored to even the game, 4-4, on a misplayed pop fly.
Quotes of the Day
"We kept coming. We gave ourselves some opportunities and got some big hits. We made a run late at a closer that's been good all year long. Those are the kind of guys we need to beat this time of year for us to get where we want to. It was a good test for us and I'm proud of the way we hung in there, we just couldn't get over the hump." – Head Coach Ryan Folmar
Holding a one-run advantage from consecutive doubles in the seventh, the Boilermakers tagged the ORU bullpen for insurance runs in the eighth inning on a two-run home run to right field. The lead-off batter was hit-by-pitch before a pinch-hit swing pushed the Golden Eagles' deficit to three, 7-4. Colton Larkins entered from the bullpen and forced the next three Purdue hitters into ground balls ending the inning without any more damage.
