TULSA, Okla. – On June 29, 2017, Oral Roberts catcher Matt Whatley became ORU's first winner—and the second from the state of Oklahoma—of the Johnny Bench Award. The award capped a stellar career for the Claremore native who was a freshman All-American in 2015 and a three time All-Summit League selection.
He was drafted in the third round by the Texas Rangers in 2017, the highest ORU draft pick since 2013 when Alex Gonzalez went 23rd overall. He threw out 43 percent of potential base stealers this season and went the entire year without an error behind the plate.
Offensively, he posted a .340 batting average with 67 extra-base hits and 134 RBI, while scoring 143 runs for the Golden Eagles.
This is the 13th of 15 editions of the #TopORUMoments from 2016-17 as selected by the ORU Media Relations Department and a social media poll.
