ELMHURST, Ill. - The Oral Roberts University volleyball team was picked 5th in the 2014 Summit League Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the conference announced today.

Denver, who finished 2nd in the 2013 Summit League standings, earned six 1st place votes and 60 total points to earn the title of league favorite. IPFW was picked 2nd, followed by defending champion IUPUI 3rd and South Dakota 4th.

The Golden Eagles went 22-7 last season and posted a 14-4 record in Southland Conference play, good for 3rd in the league. Four starters return from last season’s club, including SLC Newcomer of the Year Sara Pope, who led the squad with 3.65 kills per set.

ORU’s final NCAA Division I RPI of 96 was 13 spots higher than the top-ranked Summit League team.

The Golden Eagles are back in the Summit League after spending two seasons in the Southland Conference. ORU won seven tournament championships during their previous run in the Summit, from 1997-2011.

Sheera Sirola’s team opens their 2014 season on Aug. 29, when they travel to Malibu, Calf., for the Pepperdine Asics Classic.
