Five named Preseason All-Summit League by College Sports Madness
TULSA, Okla. – Five Oral Roberts University women’s soccer players picked up preseason accolades on Friday as College Sports Madness released its Preseason All-Summit League teams. Mentioned on the CSM Preseason All-Summit League First Team were Kayla Keller and Kaily Cox, while Megan Giles, Ashley Martin and Maddie Rhodes were listed on the second team.
A junior from Tulsa, Keller finished the 2013 season with eight goals, including two multiple goal matches against Southwestern Oklahoma State and Nicholls, and added two assists. A key part of the Golden Eagle attack, Keller earned the preseason mention as a forward, while earning All-Southland Conference Second Team honors as a midfielder last season.
Keller enters the season with 14 career goals through her first two seasons.
Cox also brings SLC awards into the Summit League for the 2014 season. A defender from Tulsa, Cox was named the SLC Newcomer of the Year, anchoring an ORU backline that allowed just 17 goals, the fewest goals allowed by a Golden Eagle team in program history. Cox also netted a goal and added two assists, both coming against McNeese State in the regular season finale.
Already in the ORU top 10 in career assists with 14, Giles is coming off a career season in which she was named to the All-Southland Second Team. A senior from Tulsa, Giles scored six goals and provided six helpers from the forward position.
Joining Giles on the CSM Second Team is Martin. A midfielder from Tulsa, Martin played in all 20 matches in 2013, scoring two goals, including the lone goal in a 1-1 draw in the Southland Conference Tournament against Southeastern Louisiana, and added two assists.
Rhodes rounds out the CSM preseason list as the second team goalkeeper. The Tulsa native started the final 15 matches between the posts, pulling in 60 saves and recording six shutouts in almost 1,500 minutes logged. Rhodes closed the season with a 10-3-1 record and was named All-Southland Conference Second Team goalkeeper.
ORU finished second in the Southland last season with a school record 15 wins, four losses and a draw in its final match against SLU. The Golden Eagles kick off the 2014 campaign Aug. 16 at former Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas.
