SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - The Oral Roberts University women’s basketball team continued their tour of Costa Rica on Saturday with a busy day of service and competition. The Golden Eagles spent the morning leading a basketball clinic at the Campamento Roblealto children’s home, and in the evening they won their first game of the trip, 57-27, over the Costa Rica national team at brand-new BN Arena.

Dorottya Balla led the Golden Eagles with 12 points in the victory, while Atoe' Jackson and Jasauen Beard scored nine points each. Faith Ihim came off the bench to tally nine points and seven rebounds, while Jackson snatched seven boards as well.

Defense was the key to the victory against a Costa Rica team left shorthanded because of the Virgen de los Angeles holiday. ORU recorded 15 steals in the game and blocked 14 shots. Ihim, Tysia Manuel and Jordan Gilbert each pilfered three steals, while Vicky McIntyre and Carolina Lopez each blocked four shots.

McIntyre added eight points and five rebounds in her first time wearing an ORU jersey. Jackson, who played a large portion of the game running the point, led the team with four assists.

After struggling offensively in the first half, ORU carried a 21-13 lead into the intermission. But the Golden Eagles exploded for 36 2nd half points.

Earlier in the day, ORU spent several hours ministering to at-risk children from Roblealto. Student-athletes and coaches taught basketball skills, played water games, sang songs and shared Golden Eagle gear with the children and foster parents at the home.

ORU’s second and final game of the trip is scheduled for Sunday night at 8 pm CT against a full-strength Costa Rica team. The Golden Eagles will also tour downtown San Jose in the morning, and they will conduct another children’s camp on Monday.

The 2014-15 Golden Eagle season begins on Nov. 1, with an exhibition game against Rockhurst. The regular season starts with a trip to two-time National Champion Baylor on Nov. 14.
