Jankovic to Coach with Serbian National Team
“It’s a tremendous honor to once again represent Serbia and ORU at the highest level of international basketball,” said Jankovic. “We were very successful last year, and I look forward to helping my country achieve even greater accomplishments this season.”
Jankovic was an assistant for Serbia in 2013, helping lead the country to a 4th place finish at the 2013 FIBA European Women’s Championship. The semifinal appearance was the first in Serbia’s history, and it earned the nation a spot in the FIBA World Championship for the first time since 2002.
“It is with great personal pleasure that I am looking forward to work with Bojan this summer," said Serbia head coach Marina Maljkovic, who is in her second season leading the team. "At the national team basketball level in Europe it takes much courage to lead, and Bojan possesses such courage. He responds with courage when challenged to produce his best."
Serbia is drawn into Group D at the event, with each of its preliminary matches scheduled to take place at Abdi İpekçi Arena in Istanbul. Serbia will face Angola on Sept. 27, the United States on Sept. 28 and China on Sept. 30. The top three finishers in the group will advance to the elimination round, which concludes with the championship game on Oct. 5 at Ülker Sports Arena in Istanbul
The winner of the event will be the first team to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Prior to the World Championship event in Turkey, Serbia will compete in three warm-up tournaments, to take place in the Czech Republic, Spain and France.
Jankovic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, is entering his fifth season at ORU. The Golden Eagles have tallied three postseason appearances in his tenure, including a bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
ORU will tip off their 2014-15 season on Saturday, Nov. 1, with an exhibition game against Rockhurst. The regular season begins on Friday, Nov. 14 in Waco, Texas, against Baylor.
