ORU hosts UMKC in opener of Tulsa Invitational on Friday
TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University women’s soccer has a date with a familiar foe on Friday as the Golden Eagles host UMKC in the opening match of the Holiday Inn City Center Tulsa Invitational Tournament.
Kickoff for Friday’s match at the Case Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m. Tulsa and Missouri State will play the other Friday match at the Hurricane Soccer and Track and Field Complex. On Sunday, the Golden Eagles will face Missouri State at TU, while the Kangaroos will take on the tournament host TU.
ORU (0-2-0) looks for its first win of the season after the Golden Eagles fell to power conference opponents Utah, 2-0, and No. 17 Texas Tech, 5-0. Kayla Keller led the Golden Eagles in the first weekend with a pair of shots on goal.
The opening weekend losses marked the first time ORU had lost consecutive matches since the 2012 season.
UMKC (1-1-0) opened the season with a 1-0 shutout win over Missouri State, and lost on Sunday to Central Arkansas, 1-0. Freshman Kara Priest scored the lone goal of the weekend in the win over UCA.
Picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference, the ‘Roos’ roster features a pair of preseason All-WAC honorees; Alyssa Elver and Sarah Todd. Elver finished last season with four goals, two fewer than the top goal scoring returner Emily Herndon.
Junior goalkeeper Nina Tzianos played in all 22 matches for the ‘Roos in 2013, recording 98 saves and eight shutouts.
The Golden Eagles are 3-1-1 all-time against UMKC, knocking off the ‘Roos at the Case Soccer Complex last season, 3-2. Megan Giles netted a goal in the matchup, while Keller and Cheyenne Diggs each recorded assists.
