Big 12 member Texas Tech awaits ORU on Sunday
TULSA, Okla. – From the Pac-12 to the Big 12, the tough start to the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer schedule continues on Sunday as the Golden Eagles hit the road for a contest at No. 17 Texas Tech. Kickoff in Lubbock, Texas, is set for 7 p.m.
ORU (0-1-0) kicked off the 2014 campaign on Friday with a 2-0 loss to 2013 Women’s College Cup qualifier Utah. The Golden Eagle offense struggled in the opener as the Utes outshot ORU, 23-3, the most shots allowed since September 24, 2012, at Tulsa.
Texas Tech was also a College Cup qualifier in 2013, reaching the second round before falling in penalty kicks to Texas A&M. The Red Raiders went 18-2-3 overall last season and finished second in the Big 12 with a 6-0-2 conference mark.
Sunday’s contest will be the regular season opener for the Red Raiders after their originally scheduled opener against New Mexico was cancelled. In exhibition action against Summit League favorite No. 25 Denver, the Red Raiders knocked off the Pioneers, 2-1.
The Red Raiders are led by Preseason All-Big 12 team members, defender Jaelene Hinkle and forward Janine Beckie.
A unanimous selection, Hinkle anchored a defense that allowed just six goals last season. She also recorded a team-high six assists. One of the recipients of Hinkle’s assists was Beckie who led the team with 12 goals, third-most in the conference last season.
In a series that began in 1995, the Red Raiders have won five of eight contests all-time against the Golden Eagles. ORU’s last victory against TTU came at home on September 9, 2005, 2-1. The victory held as the last victory over a Big 12 opponent prior to ORU’s win over Oklahoma in 2012.
