Golden Eagles to face former SLC foe UCA in exhibition
TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team begins its return season to the Summit League with an exhibition match against a former Southland Conference rival as the Golden Eagles travel to Central Arkansas on Saturday. Kickoff against is the Bears is scheduled for 5 p.m.
During its two-year stint in the Southland, the Golden Eagles went 2-0 against UCA in conference action, including a 4-1 victory last season at the Case Soccer Complex. ORU (15-4-1, 10-2-0) finished 2013 with a school record in wins and a second place finish in the conference, while UCA (9-10-2, 6-6-0) qualified for its first-ever SLC Tournament as the sixth and final seed.
The Golden Eagle roster features 11 newcomers entering the 2014 season, including senior defender Hailey Haynes, who played three seasons for the Bears. She joins a backline that allowed 17 goals last season, the fewest allowed in a season in program history.
The Bears attack this season will be led by Preseason First Team All-Southland midfielder Vanessa Randall, as well as Brooke Ballard and Shelby Wilson, who combined for nine goals and six assists last season. However, UCA has a question mark between the posts as a pair of freshmen, Sarah Mayorga and Anna Hughes, will compete for the starting goalkeeper spot.
ORU has won all three of its matches during regular season action against the Bears, with the regular season series beginning in 2009.
