Golden Eagles travel to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday
TULSA, Okla. – Winners of eight out of their last ten games, the Oral Roberts University baseball team looks for its third straight Southland Conference series victory as the Golden Eagles travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday for the first of a three-game set.
First pitch for games one and two on Friday and Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the series finale beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
ORU (22-18, 9-9) are fresh off a victory 15-8 against No. 9 Oklahoma State on Tuesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. Jose Trevino had a pair of doubles and the ORU bullpen held the Cowboys hitless in the final four innings in the victory.
Tyler Boss has been the hot bat for the Golden Eagles in conference play as the senior is hitting .429 against league opponents and leads the team with a .346 average. Trevino has a team high nine home runs and 33 runs batted in.
Though the first 40 games of the season, ORU is outscoring opponents 200-170. In comparison, the roles were reversed as last season as opponents were outscoring the Golden Eagles 202-172. A big part of that success is the Golden Eagle pitching staff with a 3.55 earned run average, fourth best in the Southland.
The Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (23-19, 12-6) have been one of the hottest teams in the Southland over the past two weeks, riding a five-game winning streak in the series on Friday including a three-game sweep last week over Northwestern State. The Islanders are currently in a three-way tie with Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls, and just three games ahead of ORU who is in ninth place.
The reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, Brandon Tierney, leads the Islanders at the plate with a .368 average, fourth highest in the conference, with ten doubles, two triples, three home runs and 25 RBI’s. Friday’s projected starter Matt Danton has a team high earned run average of 3.28, while Trevor Belicek, Saturday’s probable pitcher, is fourth in the league with 52 strikeouts this season.
ORU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi split four games against each other during the 2013 season, with the Golden Eagles ending the Islanders season in the Southland Conference Tournament.
